Caught up in the Civil War, comfortable Cloverly served as a recuperation center for Union hospital nurses. It was built in 1852 by Baltimore druggist B. Rush Roberts who called it Sherwood. His wife Mary Needles gave the land for the high school and also the name. She hosted the founding meeting of the Women's Mutual Improvement Association. John C. and Mary Hallowell Bentley bought the home 1888 and changed the name to Cloverly. At left are Florence, Jack , Edith, Mildred, and Elsie Bentley. The Lucey and then Edsall families have since owned Cloverly.
