The Insurance Company and Bank Continued...

Unadorned Harewood, home of Edward Stabler, served as the Insurance Company's unofficial headquarters during the first decade. During Edward Stabler's 53-years as postmaster it also was the Sandy Spring Post Office, with mail slots standing between dining room and kitchen, and patrons entering from the back porch.

The burning of Joshua Peirce's barn in 1841 led to the formation of the Insurance Company, of which he became a director. In 1822 he and wife Hannah reached Riverton from Philadelphia in a large farm wagon "after a tedious and fatiguing journey over a long and ruff road."
