Helping hands of the Underground Railroad assisted slave members of the Howard and Holland families in their escape to Canada before and during the Civil War. Today their periodic reunions in Canada and the U.S. attract hundreds, part of whom are seen here at a reunion in Scarborough, Ontario. The multiracial families blend white, African American, and Native American ancestry. Numerous family members live today in Cincinnati and other Sandy Spring Communities.
