Joseph and Lucy Stabler, brother and sister, lived their entire lives at Auburn on Meeting House Road. Neither ever married. As a child Joe's job was to tend the livestock in the unfenced fields. For many years after his death, neighbors were sure they saw Joe walking his fields, tending the long-gone herds. Lucy too haunted Auburn: She was said to have materialized in the bedroom of a very young boy on many occasions, appearing as an old lady wearing a cap, carrying a cane, and pointing her fingers.
