Readying for take-off, Darington Riggs refuels Doug Oland's Piper Cub c.1938. Their airstrip was a raw field where Johnson's Nursery (formerly Burton's) now stands. "The Cub had a 45-horsepower engine," recalls frequent flyer Tom Kemp, "it seemed to take an hour to climb to 3,000 feet."
