Edward Stabler

As a young man during the War of 1812, Edward Stabler (1794-1883) was imprisoned for his pacifism. His mother Deborah Pleasants quickly wrote her childhood playmate Dolley Madison. Said the response: "I tell you, Debby, I gave Jimmy (President Madison) no rest until he ordered Edward's release." Innovative farmer, Sandy Spring postmaster for 53 years, inventor of a seed drill and corn-husking device, organizer of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Stabler taught himself the art of seal-making to supplement his income. Using a superior press of his own invention, he struck seals for the U. S. Senate, House of Representatives, Treasury, Post Office, Supreme Court, and many others. When Secretary of State Dean Acheson moved into the Stabler home Harewood, he discovered the seal Stabler had made for the Department of State.
