HOMES: CLIFTON
Built in 1742 by John Thomas, Clifton at Ednor stands as the oldest largely-intact home in the entire eastern piedmont. It is also Sandy Spring's most carefully restored old home, by its owners Jim and Beth Bullard. Classical Tidewater Georgian in style, Clifton displays segmental arched windows, slab chimneys, gambrel roof, and shed dormers. It has six fireplaces. At the far end of the front hall is a "funeral door," reflecting the superstition that carrying a corpse out the front door brought bad luck.
	William John Thomas I was the fourth of seven generations of Thomases to live at Clifton. His great great grandson, William John IV, served as Sandy Spring postmaster for 33 years.
