SCHOOLS: SANDY SPRING FRIENDS SCHOOL
Friends School takes shape in still-open land off Norwood Road in this 1964 aerial. Grades ten and eleven opened in 1961 with 77 students and seven faculty. Today the bustling campus teaches grades K through 12 and boasts doemitory facilities and an enrollment of nearly 500. In the background of the photograph, excavation marks the construction of the Friends retirement center. Ground has not yet been broken for Stabler Hall nursing home, which will rise at left.

S. Brooke Moore, school founder
Moving spirits behind today's Friends School survey the building site in 1960. They are S. Brooke Moore, school founder, Dr. Charles H. Ligon (almost hidden behind Moore), member of the first Board, headmaster Thornton Brown, and Esther Scott, who initially donated 55 acres for the schol and eventually gave 130.
