SCHOOLS: SANDY SPRING ELEMENTARY
Olney Public School
Neckties and bare feet set the fashion in Beulah Henderson's 1904 class at the old Sandy Spring elementary, a Friends school located next to the Lyceum. In 1906 it joined the county school system. Two years later construction of then-public Sherwood High made room for lower grades, closing Sandy Spring and beginning Sherwood's long role as a consolidated school. The old frame schoolhouse was acquired by the Quaker Meeting, eventually became the home of Vernon and Sarah Dantz, and today is owned by the Insurance Company.
