Sandy Spring Museum collects documents, artifacts, audio and video records, and published books from a six-mile radius around the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting.  This collecting area extends to Unity/Sunshine in the north to Spencerville and Burtonsville in the south, from Highland in the east, west almost to Laytonsville.   Our collections document the life of the community – its politics, economies, work, play, and family life.  We collect records of individual, families, corporations, and groups, both formal and informal.

Through our collections, we strive to enable researchers to understand the impact of the agriculture heartland that coexisted with America’s growing megalopolis, to immerse themselves in the traditions of innovation and leadership that made this area, while rural, very far from isolated.  We seek to preserve records of the community’s proud leadership in anti-slavery work, African-American landowning, education, women’s suffrage, constitutional politics, and innovation in both agriculture and commerce.

New materials come in every week, and the volunteer library staff works hard to assess, catalog, and carefully store everything.  We also share materials with other nearby repositories, since the politics and economy of our area overlapped extensively with Baltimore, Georgetown, Frederick, Howard, and other Maryland counties, as well as with Philadelphia to the north.
