History & Collections

A History of the Land

The seven acres that are now home to Sandy Spring Museum have a long and complicated history. The land has been shaped by Native American communities, colonial settlement, plantations and enslavement, farming, commerce, war, and generations of the Bentley family. Today, the property is entering another chapter.
