Teaching English Language Learners
This book is a compilation of answers to all the questions that consistently came up about how to help English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL ) kids be happy and successful in their classrooms, and includes advice from teachers. Author, Ann Morgan, was inspired by her work as an ESOL teacher to put together this work in hopes of creating a resource for other educators. Teaching English Language Learners is already being considered for use as a teacher-training text by universities in ten states, and an online consortium of colleges and universities as the basis of a new course that will be offered starting next spring.
Among many accomplishments, Ms. Morgan writes for the Maryland Humanities and Department of Education, and has written/consulted for Discovery Education, NIH, and Oxford University Press.
Using Art to Teach Writing
Using Art to Teach Writing, provides children with the opportunity to move between imagination, visual representation, and words. This book, written by Jennifer Klein and Elizabeth Stuart Whitehead, provides teachers with integrated literacy and art lessons that they can use right away in their classrooms to teach the following writing traits: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation. Each chapter focuses on one of the writing traits, defines each trait, and provides classroom-tested lessons and ideas to teach the traits through the visual arts in order to improve writing skills.
Jennifer Klein has worked as an elementary classroom teacher, gifted and talented teacher, and staff development teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), and is currently a Reading Specialist for MCPS. Co-author Elizabeth Stuart Whitehead is the Visual Art Supervisor for Price George’s County Public Schools.
