Bridging the Gap

Sunday, October 24 at 12:00 pm 4:00 pm

Presented by “Inmates ‘R’ Us,” Bridging the Gap is a day of fun supporting the children and families of incarcerated individuals. This fun day features outdoor games, crafts, letter writing, food, and more! Help us bridge the gap between society and incarceration!

Why is this event needed?  According to the Population Reference Bureau, “U.S. children of incarcerated parents are an extremely vulnerable group, and much more likely to have behavioral problems and physical and mental health conditions than their peers, reports Kristin Turney, a University of California-Irvine sociologist.”(PRB)

In the PRB report Turney states that, “we know that poor people and racial minorities are incarcerated at higher rates than the rest of the population,” she says. “Incarceration is likely compounding the disadvantages their children face, setting them further behind, and contributing to racial and social class inequalities in children’s health.”(PRB)

“The number of children with a parent in prison or jail grew five times between 1980 and 2012, growing from about 500,000 to 2.6 million, according to recent estimates by sociologists Bryan Sykes of University of California-Irvine and Becky Pettit of University of Texas-Austin.”(PRB)
