Historically Black Communities of Sandy Spring – A Discussion

Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This program will be held at Ross Boddy Community Center.

At the turn of the 20th century, the black population living in Sandy Spring far exceeded the white population.  Both free and enslaved blacks have been living in Sandy Spring since the 1700s but there is little written history on the people and the self-sufficient, segregated black communities that were built.

Sandy Spring Museum is embarking on a research project to document the seventeen black communities that existed within six miles of the Sandy Spring Meeting House in the early 1900s.  Everyone is invited to this meeting at which we will discuss the project and what research has been done to date.  If you grew up in the Sandy Spring area, or have family members who did, or if you are just interested in black history, you are welcome to participate in this community discussion.
