History Happy Hour: Code Girls – SOLD OUT

Friday, December 6, 2019 at 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Members are invited to attend a private reception with Liza Mundy preceding the event at 6pm.

In 1940s and 1950s, most women, even well-educated ones, were encouraged not to have careers, and could not get decent jobs. Except, that is, those who went to Washington, DC to become code breakers in WWII. Working 12-hour, 7-day work weeks in steamy offices with endless lists of numbers and letters, thousands of schoolteachers recruited by the American Army broke the codes that encrypted German and Japanese messages, and helped to win the Second World War. This mission was so top secret that practically no one knew about the work, yet it had far-reaching consequences for today’s expanding field of cyber security, and data network protection and attack. Code Girls looks at the personal stories of individual women, and the social changes that took place as America went to war.

Liza Mundy brings thorough research and details together in her the fascinating, behind-the-scenes story, Code Girls. Mundy is a journalist and non-fiction writer. She is the author of books on feminist topics, and New York Times bestseller, Michelle, a biography of First Lady Michelle Obama.
