The Story of Martin’s Dairy & Spring Membership Meeting

Reminisce about Martin’s Farm, Martin’s Dairy, Higgins Tavern, and the Silo Inn with descendants of the Tavernner and Martin families.

Martin’s Dairy may be more fondly remembered for its ice cream shop than for the dairy.  The Martin family ran the operation for decades till closing in 1956, at which time it was sold and converted into the Silo Inn.  The inn was a landmark in upper Montgomery County. Washington Post restaurant critic Eve Zibart, writing in 1988, described it as one of a number of “family-style relics in the upper Montgomery County environs; driving up there is like taking a ’50s-style family vacation in the car, looking for the restaurants with plaster fawns in the front yard and a discreet COLD DRAUGHT sign in the window.

Following this program, the Spring Membership Meeting will provide an update on the museum.  This is a museum member’s-only program but anyone is welcome to join the museum on the spot!  Take advantage of the special $10 first-time member offer.

This is a great time to catch up on what’s new at the Museum, see old friends and welcome new members and neighbors. You are also encouraged to bring a pie to the spring membership meeting, as is the tradition!  Please RSVP so we know how many people will be eating pie!
