Plena Composition Workshop

Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

$25 for Museum and Cultura Plenera members, $30 for non-members
Ages 15 and up
Due to the subject matter of this workshop (discussion of Spanish Plena songs and composition of Plena songs in Spanish) this workshop will be presented in Spanish.

Create beautiful music with two of the most gifted composers and performers of Puerto Rican Plena. Víctor Vélez and Tito Rodriguez bring their expertise to Sandy Spring with this interactive workshop.

Based on the African tradition of call-and-response, and rooted deeply in the narration of experiences of the Puerto Rican people, Plena has a century long tradition of expressing in song what infuriates, amuses, and makes them happy. Whether you want to simply learn about this unique aspect of Puerto Rican culture, or truly want to acquire the skills to venture into your own Plena compositions, this workshop will not disappoint.

Victor is a subject-matter-expert in Plena songs from its origins to modern times, with hundreds of songs to his credit. Tito comes to Plena from a multi-genre background, is a lead innovator in the current practice of Plena, and has composed some of the most fresh and innovative Plena songs of the last decade.
