Reception for Uprooted: The Art of Refugees

Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join the community for the opening reception of this special exhibit of art made by six people who came to the DC metro region as refugees from Iraq, Ethiopia and Somalia. Meet the artists and learn more about their personal stories of hardship and triumph as they remade their lives in the United States.  Artists include Ahmed Karkhi, Khalid Alaani, Fetun Getachew,  Alemzewd Alemu, Rand Shihab, and Mohamed Abdurahman Abukam.

Conflicts around the globe and the current political climate have put an acute focus on the plight of refugees.  Globally it is estimated that there are more than 65 million people who are refugees, asylum-seekers or internally displaced.  In Maryland that number is approximately 40,000.

Enjoy refreshments and a fashion show while viewing art and meeting these talented individuals.

This exhibit was generously sponsored by the Mendick Family.
