Reception for Uprooted: The Art of Refugees
May 5 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
Join the community for the opening reception of this special exhibit of art made by six people who came to the DC metro region as refugees. Meet the artists and learn more about their personal stories of hardship and triumph as they remade their lives in the United States. Artists include Ahmed Karkhi, Khalid Alaani, Fetun Getachew, Alemzewd Alemu, Rand Shihab, and Mohamed Abdurahman Abukam. These artists fled from their countries to escape various hardships facing them in their countries of origin including Iraq, Ethiopia and Somalia.
Conflicts around the globe and the current political climate have put an acute focus on the plight of refugees. Globally it is estimated that there are more than 65 million people who are refugees, asylum-seekers or internally displaced. In Maryland that number is approximately 40,000.
Enjoy refreshments and a fashion show while viewing the works of these talented individuals.
This exhibit was generously sponsored by the Mendick Family.
