Transforming Textiles Sustainably with Resident Artist, Patricia Powell Kessler

Museum Member: $190, Non-Member: $225
Materials Fee: $50 paid direct to artist

On Day One, beginners and experienced artists will find safe sources of color and pattern from materials locally sourced in woods, fields and gardens.  We will begin with an overview of how to prepare textiles for the dye process.  Mordants including soy and the requirements for dyeing silk and wool will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will make dye pots.

Bundle dying or eco-dying techniques will enable everyone to discover the variety of colors naturally occurring in plant materials. Wrapping selected items tightly and immersing them in a heated bath allows them to transfer onto the silk and wool fabric.

Day Two is devoted to indigo!  A vat of this universal color will be made by using only non-toxic methods.  Several methods of pattern making including resist will be demonstrated to be used with this wonderful blue.  It requires no mordant is especially suited to cotton.

Participants will be given packets of silk, cotton, and wool cloth, and two silk scarves.  Printed directions for preparing dyes and mordanting cloth, a bibliography and supply sources will be given to each participant for future reference.

This workshop will be held in Patricia’s ground floor studio in the Bank Barn from 10 am until 4 pm with a one-hour lunch break from 12:30 until 1:30 pm. Participants are invited to eat bagged lunches on the Museum grounds or visit the restaurants and cafes nearby.

Bring a pair of long kitchen gloves. Wear closed toed shoes and an apron or clothing that you won’t mind staining.
