WondeRoom Create Dates

The WondeRoom is a free, dedicated space filled with experiential, hands-on, family-friendly activities that inspire creativity through design based problem solving challenges. Activities in the WondeRoom are inter-generational and require children and their grown-ups to work together!

Registration is required for all Create Dates.

Create Date – Notan Drawing
Sunday, January 19 from noon – 4 pm
Notan is a Japanese word meaning the relationship between light and dark, where black construction paper is cut out to illicit the white background (or vice versa), producing both positive and negative shapes. This program is limited to 40 participants. This Create Date is facilitated by the young leaders of Lucky Clover 4-H.

Create Date – Art Dolls
Sunday, February 2 from noon – 4 pm
Inspired by the exhibition, Art Dolls: Figurative Sculptures That Tell a Story. Explore how different cultures use small figurative sculptures. Participants will learn about Kachinas of the Hopi people, Ndebele figures from the Ndebele people of South Africa, and Kokeshi dolls from Japan. Come and create your own figurative sculpture from recycled materials.

Create Date – Mothers with Books
Sunday, February 16 from noon – 4 pm

Young artists will celebrate Mom during this special Valentine’s Day themed Create Date brought to you in part by Brothers With Books. Moms are invited to join their children to creating beautiful baskets out of recycled materials that will be filled with books for both mom and kids before heading home. This program is limited to 40 participants. This Create Date is facilitated by the young leaders of Lucky Clover 4-H.

Sunday, March 1 from noon – 4 pm

Create Date – Tissue Paper Transfer Art
Sunday, March 15 from noon – 4 pm
Tissue paper is placed on a piece of water color canvas paper, then lightly sprayed, causing the tissue paper to bleed onto the canvas.  Once the tissue paper is removed, the canvas becomes the art, with the color from the images of the tissue paper. This program is limited to 40 participants. This Create Date is facilitated by the young leaders of Lucky Clover 4-H.

Create Date – Repurposing
Sunday, April 5 from noon – 4 pm
To repurpose something is to use it in a way that is different from the original intended use. Repurposing an item can be done by adapting it to fit a new use, or by using the item as is in a new way. Participants of this Create Date will repurpose drapery tassels. With some imagination and other recycled items, these tassels will transform into beautiful works of art. This program is limited to 42 participants.

Create Date – Pulled String Art
Sunday, April 19 from noon – 4 pm
Little artists will be create beautiful works of art that look like flowers from string, card stock, ink, and a little bit of pressure. This Create Date is facilitated by the young leaders of Lucky Clover 4-H.

Create Date – Dr. Bird’s Carriage
Sunday, May 3 from noon – 4 pm
The first thing visitors see in the WonderRoom is the green and yellow horse carriage. This carriage belonged to Dr. Bird, who cared for the residents of Sandy Spring for many years. During this Create Date, we will talk about how transportation has changed in Sandy Spring over the years. Young artists will create their own imaginary transportation vehicles from the recycled materials.
