History News Article: Equity in Metedata
Traditional archiving practices often catalog historical records solely under the names of white creators or landowners, leaving the stories of Black community members buried deep inside hundreds of ledger pages.
To bridge this gap, Sandy Spring Museum (SSM) in Maryland launched the Equity in Metadata initiative. This restorative cataloging project extracts individual pages referencing Black residents to create unique, searchable digital profiles. By giving a historic Black laborer the exact same depth of metadata as a white property owner, the museum ensures a more holistic and accurate discovery of intertwined local histories.
