First-Timer’s Guide: Sandy Spring Bluegrass Jam
There's something magical about a circle of musicians sharing a tune. On the fourth Sunday of every month, the Museum fills with the warm, earthy sounds of banjos, fiddles, and mandolins. The Sandy Spring Bluegrass Jam (SSBJ) isn't just a gathering—it's a space where music, laughter, and connection naturally blend.
This photo gallery captures a few of these moments: smiles between strangers, families tapping their feet, and the sunlight filtering through as melodies weave the room together.

A Place for Everyone
You don't need to be a virtuoso to join in. Many attendees are simply curious, picking up a new instrument, or just looking to enjoy live music. Others are seasoned players, offering friendly nods as the next song begins. There's no stage, no spotlight—just a circle where everyone belongs.
If you'd like to get a feel for the jam before you arrive, check out our YouTube playlist featuring tunes from The Fire Hazards. The music tells its own stories, with each note connecting past gatherings with the next.
The People Behind the Music
Every month, volunteers including multi-instrumentalist Ben Kepler, and John Hartge and Bruce Evans (two-thirds of the local Fire Hazards trio) bring this tradition to life. Their love for bluegrass is contagious, but it's the sense of community they share that keeps everyone coming back.
A Welcoming Afternoon
Picture yourself walking into the museum on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Someone is tuning a banjo in the corner, a couple of friends are softly harmonizing, and the first strum of a guitar sets the whole group in motion. For two hours, the outside world fades as the sound of bluegrass takes over.
We often share these small but beautiful moments on our social media, where you can see past jams come to life.
Curious to Join?
Bring an instrument if you have one or just come and listen. The bluegrass tradition is all about passing songs from one person to another, and you might find yourself humming along before the end of the day.
