A Maryland museum director gave her beautiful building to the community

Community members gathered at a Sandy Spring Museum event

Sandy Spring Museum was recognized by the Aspen Institute for our community-forward approach.

The piece reflects on the decision by the former director to transfer ownership of the museum's historic building to the community it serves. Rather than viewing the building as a personal or institutional asset, the decision centered on long-term public stewardship, access, and the belief that cultural spaces are strongest when they truly belong to their communities.
